Curve ball

An unexpected and sad development. Sandy called Alistair, our friend who works in the City, to arrange catching up. Alistair told us that our friend Grant, who lives in Paris and who we planned to hang out with when we head to Paris, died a couple of days ago. He, as we were, was in total shock; Grant was 36, my age, and a perfect, healthy guy. Apparently there was some complication in surgery for a burst intestine - does that sound right? Anyway; the result of that is that Sandy is going to Paris today with Alistair for a memorial service, while I stay here for the day.

This throws the Paris part of our trip into a new light. Sandy was so looking forward to seeing his friend; Grant was a multi-talented guy who was brilliantly clever and a talented sportsman and we were both looking forward to seeing Paris through his eyes. I couldn't stop thinking about him last night and his poor family, especially his mother. It's not the sort of thing that's supposed to happen.
